A Willow woman has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty after authorities discovered dozens of dead sled dogs on a property in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, officials confirmed Tuesday.
Alaska State Troopers said 25 dogs were found dead earlier this month at a private property in the Caswell Lakes area, located between Willow and Talkeetna. The woman, identified as 35-year-old Misty Rehder, was taken into custody without incident and faces 26 counts of animal cruelty.
Investigation Follows Months of Complaints
The discovery came after months of concern from local residents and members of Alaska’s mushing community, who said they had repeatedly contacted authorities about the dogs’ welfare.
Witnesses reported signs of neglect dating back to January, including lack of food, water, and visible care for the animals. Despite those reports, neighbors said intervention appeared limited before the situation escalated.
The case is now under active investigation by Alaska State Troopers in coordination with Matanuska-Susitna Borough Animal Control.
Community Outrage and Internal Review
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the tight-knit Mat-Su community, where sled dogs play a central role in local culture and recreation.
Officials confirmed that:
- Only one dog survived and is currently receiving care
- An internal review is underway to examine how earlier complaints were handled
- Authorities are assessing whether response protocols were sufficient
Matanuska-Susitna Borough officials acknowledged community concerns and said the outcome highlights the need for improved oversight.
Importance
Sled dogs are an important part of Alaska’s heritage, particularly in regions like Willow, which is closely tied to mushing activities and events.
The case raises broader concerns about:
- Animal welfare enforcement in remote areas
- Response times to community complaints
- Oversight of private kennels
Advocates say the incident underscores the importance of early intervention when neglect is suspected.
