Travis Timmerman was freed from Syrian prison. Travis Timmerman, a 30-year-old American, was found wandering near Damascus after months in a Syrian jail. He had entered Syria on foot seven months ago and was arrested. Timmerman was reported missing in May after he was last seen in Budapest, Hungary.
Timmerman described being freed by hammer-wielding men as rebels overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad. He said two men broke open his prison door, and he left with a large group of people. Timmerman had been trying to make his way to Jordon and was grateful for the help he received from local people.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, confirmed that Washington was working to bring TImmerman home. Blinken added that he couldn’t give details about the exact plans. Thousands of prisoners have been released since the fall of Assad. And many families are still searching for their loved ones.
Meanwhile, the search for US journalist Austin Tice continues. Tice is believed to be alive and held by the Assad regime. The US is working to locate and free him.
In addition to Timmerman’s release, the Syrian Civil Defence Organization, known as the White Helmets, has been helping the search for prisoners. They have been looking for secret prisons in several areas of Damascus.
The White Helmets have helped recover thousands of detainees from the prisons. However, many families are still searching for their loved ones. The situation remains dire, with many prisoners still unaccounted for.
