A massive Russian missile and drone assault killed at least 18 people and injured more than 100 across Ukraine, marking one of the deadliest aerial attacks of 2026 and prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to make a renewed appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump for additional air defense support.
The overnight barrage struck multiple cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro, with residential buildings, clinics, schools, and critical infrastructure among the reported targets. Ukrainian officials said Russia launched 73 missiles and more than 600 drones, overwhelming parts of the country’s air defense network despite numerous interceptions.
A Night of Destruction
For many Ukrainians, the attack was another reminder that the war remains far from over.
In Dnipro, the hardest-hit city, at least 12 people were killed after strikes damaged residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. Kyiv reported additional fatalities and dozens of injuries, while emergency crews worked through the night searching rubble for survivors.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as explosions echoed across neighborhoods.
One Kyiv resident told Reuters the attack felt like “some kind of apocalypse” as smoke filled the air and residents rushed to shelters amid repeated explosions.
The scale of the assault made it one of the largest Russian aerial attacks of the year. Ukrainian officials said air defenses intercepted hundreds of incoming drones and missiles, but many still reached their targets.
Zelensky’s Message to Trump
The attack has intensified pressure on Ukraine’s Western allies, particularly the United States.
Following the strikes, Zelenskyy urged President Trump to accelerate deliveries of Patriot missile defense systems, arguing that Ukraine urgently needs more interceptors to protect civilians from increasingly sophisticated Russian attacks.
According to Ukrainian officials, Patriot systems remain one of the few defenses capable of intercepting advanced ballistic and hypersonic missiles used by Russia. The latest attack reportedly included several Zircon hypersonic missiles, which are among the most difficult weapons to stop.
Ukraine has repeatedly warned that shortages of missile defense systems could leave major cities increasingly vulnerable as Russia expands its use of large-scale drone and missile barrages.
Moscow Signals Escalation
Russia described the strikes as a response to Ukrainian attacks and claimed military-industrial facilities were targeted. Ukrainian officials disputed those claims, pointing to extensive damage in residential areas and civilian casualties.
The assault comes amid signs that Moscow is intensifying its aerial campaign as ground fighting continues with limited territorial changes on the battlefield. Analysts say large-scale missile and drone attacks have become a key part of Russia’s strategy to pressure Ukraine’s infrastructure and air defenses.
Why This Attack Matters
Beyond the immediate loss of life, the latest strikes highlight a growing challenge for Ukraine.
While Western military aid has helped Ukraine defend many of its cities, the sheer volume of drones and missiles being launched by Russia is testing the limits of existing air defense systems. Each large-scale attack forces Ukraine to expend valuable interceptor missiles that are difficult and expensive to replace.
The attack also arrives at a politically sensitive moment as Kyiv seeks additional military support from Washington while the Trump administration balances competing global security priorities.
For Ukrainians who spent another night in shelters and subway stations, however, the political debate is secondary. The immediate concern remains survival as the war enters another dangerous phase.
