Anchorage police have identified a body discovered earlier this month as a 19-year-old woman who had been reported missing in January, investigation continues to examine the circumstances surrounding her death.
The body was found on April 20 in the Spenard neighborhood, prompting a death investigation. The remains were later confirmed to be those of the missing teenager, who had last been seen shortly after arriving in Anchorage in early January.
Missing Since Early January
Police said the teen arrived in Anchorage on January 6 and was staying at a residence in the city before she disappeared the following day. She was officially reported missing several days later, leading to an active investigation by detectives.
Despite search efforts and community concern over the case, there were no confirmed sightings in the months following her disappearance.
Body Discovered in Spenard Area
Officers responded to a report of a deceased person on Lois Drive in the Spenard area, where the body was located outdoors. Authorities have not disclosed how long the remains had been at the location.
Next-of-kin notifications have been completed, and police said the investigation remains ongoing.
Cause of Death Still Undetermined
Officials confirmed that the State Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, and it remains unclear whether foul play was involved.
Police have not made any arrests, and investigators have not ruled out any possibilities as they continue to gather evidence.
Anchorage Police Chief said the case could remain classified as a death investigation or potentially be reclassified depending on findings from the medical examiner.
