US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his Gaza resettlement plan, stating that the two million Palestinians relocated to neighboring countries would lose their right to return. Trump emphasized that displaced Palestinians would receive much better housing under his proposed initiative to rebuild Gaza.
Trump’s comments followed his controversial declaration that he was committed to buying and owning Gaza, which has drawn strong international criticism. Palestinian leaders from both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas rejected the proposal, stating that Palestinian land is not for sale.
The United Nations issued a warning declaring that forcibly displaced civilians from occupied territories violates international law and amounts to ethnic cleansing. Despite this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump’s Gaza resettlement plan.
Trump’s remarks surfaced amid a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, where Hamas has been exchanging Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The Israeli military launched its offensive against Hamas after the October 7th, 2023, attack, which killed 1200 people and resulted in 251 hostages.
Since then, Hamas-run health authorities in Gaza have reported over 48,200 Palestinian deaths due to Israeli military operations. Gaza remains in a dire humanitarian crisis, with most residents displaced multiple times, essential infrastructure in ruins, and severe shortages of food, fuel, and medical supplies.
Nearly 70% of the enclaves have suffered damages or destruction, while its healthcare, water, and sanitation systems have collapsed. As debates over Gaza’s future continue, Trump’s proposal has deepened global divisions over the region’s reconstruction and the fate of its displaced population.
