Late Monday night, senior Department of Health and Human Services officials received surprise emails offering sudden job reassignments to IHS posts. The emails sent by Deputy Assistant Secretary Thomas J. Nagy Jr. framed the move as an effort to serve tribal communities.
HHS described the reassignments as a necessary shift to strengthen healthcare services for American Indian and Alaskan Native populations. However, health leaders and public health advocates argue that this was part of a broader, coordinated HHS reassignment controversy targeting senior officials.
Nine federal health leaders confirmed receiving the reassignment offers, though sources suggest the number could be higher. Those given reassignment options had to respond within two days, raising concerns about transparency and intent.
Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, Dr. Christine Grady, and several others close to Dr. Anthony Fauci were among those offered the transfers. Critics believe this reflects political retaliation from the Trump-era handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is clearly designed to force talented scientists and health experts to leave government,” said Richard Besser of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Others argue it disrespects IHS, using the agency as a tool rather than addressing its staffing needs. “The most cynical view is this is a way to get senior people to quit,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin of the American Public Health Association.
Some reassignment locations included remote areas in Alaska, Montana, and New Mexico—regions typically served by IHS. Advocates of IHS like William “Chief Bill” Smith said the government must first consult with tribes, as required by law.
“Any major leadership changes within IHS should be made in full consultation with Tribal Nations,” Smith stated on behalf of the National Indian Health Board. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., current HHS Secretary, defended IHS, noting he reversed previous mass firings within the agency. Still, the controversy raises questions about intent, ethics, and the long-term impact on public health infrastructure.
