The flooding in Malaysia due to heavy rain has triggered severe flooding, forcing over 122,000 people into temporary shelters as the situation worsens. Disaster officials report three fatalities so far, with fears that the death toll could climb due to continued heavy rain.
The flooding has affected several states, with Kelantan bearing the brunt as 80,640 evacuees from 25,042 families seek refuge in 279 shelters. Nine rivers in Kelantan remain above hazardous levels, according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.
Other districts, like Pasir Mas and Tumpat, have also reported significant displacement. Pasir Mas housing 24,890 evacuees. According to State Disaster Management, Terengganu recorded a sharp increase in evacuees from 24,752 to 35,124 within 12 hours.
Districts like Besut and Setiu face the most severe impacts, with 13,930 victims in 117 shelters in Besut. Emergency teams have set up additional facilities, including shelters at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Nilam, SK Paloh, SK Banggol Peradong, and SK Atas Tol.
Flooding also impacts Kedah, Perlis, Johor, Melaka, Perak, and Selangor, with evacuee numbers fluctuating in the area. In Kedah, the number of displaced victims rose to 7,911 across 50 shelters, up from 6,037 last night.
Negeri Sembilan now has 2,174 victims in 22 shelters, with Kuala Pilah, Tampin, Jempol, and Port Dickson among the worst-hit areas. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim´s office has directed state governments to prioritize managing the disaster due to the flooding in Malaysia and barred cabinet members from taking leave. Floods also impact neighboring Thailand, where six provinces have declared disasters and over 240,000 households face severe water damage.
