In Anchorage, Alaska, families, clinicians, and advocates gathered for “The Climb,” a pivotal event focused on maternal health and wellness. The Alaska Chapter of Postpartum Support International (PSI) organized this ninth-annual event to raise vital awareness and funds for perinatal and maternal health issues.
Morgan Turner, the event organizer, explained that PSI provides essential support to new parents through peer support, call lines, and online groups. “The Climb” is a crucial fundraiser, allocating half the funds locally and the other half nationally.
The two-day event featured renowned speakers, interactive panels, and informative sessions, welcoming individuals affected by perinatal health conditions. Dr. Monique Andrews, an attendee and speaker, emphasized that maternal mental health concerns extend beyond women, impacting entire families.
Clinicians and healthcare professionals attended “The Climb” to share experiences and engage with attendees. Turner noted, “We unite for a common cause: supporting maternal health and wellness.”
Event organizers partnered with Alaska Pacific University and local sponsors, including the Alaska Club and Moose’s Tooth Pizza. Joclyn Reilly, organizer, stressed the importance of alleviating the stigma surrounding mental health crises. Reilly emphasized, “We aim to empower families to discuss their struggles openly, without shame.”
By fostering candid conversations, “The Climb” advances the discussion on maternal and family mental health issues. With “The Climb for Maternal Health” at its core, attendees – families, clinicians, and advocates – shared a united goal.
As “The Climb” continues to grow, its impact on maternal health will be profound. It will raise awareness and funds to support families and promote a healthier community.
