Majo Hernandez, a 13-year-old seventh-grader from Homer Middle School, took home the top prize at the Alaska State Spelling Bee. This year’s competition was fierce, with 75 students vying for the title.
Hernandez’s winning word was “tomahawk.” She said she didn’t feel nervous, aside from the “jitters.” When she realized she had won, she felt proud and relieved.
The competition was held at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The event aimed to inspire literacy and other skills among young students. Hernandez’s family and friends were in attendance, cheering her on throughout the competition.
Meanwhile, Meghan Redmond, principal at Homer Middle School, was overjoyed by the news. “I was incredibly loud when I first heard,” Redmond said. She described Hernandez as a positive and voracious reader who loves learning.
In addition, Hernandez has been competing in school spelling bees since she was in fifth grade. This year, she started preparing for the state competition a week before her school’s spelling bee.
Hernandez’s hard work and dedication were evident in her preparation. She spent hours studying and practicing, determined to make it to the top. Her efforts paid off, and she emerged victorious.
Furthermore, Hernandez’s hard work paid off. She used the spelling bee’s app to practice with games, wrote words out, and spoke them aloud to family and friends.
Moreover, Hernandez was awarded $3,000 in the form of a 529 investment toward future college expenses. She will represent Alaska at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Hernandez’s win is a testament to her dedication. As Majo Hernandez Alaska state Spelling Bee champion, she will go on to represent Alaska at the national level.
Hernandez’s school is planning a celebration to honor her achievement. Redmond said the staff is thrilled to recognize Hernandez’s accomplishment. Hernandez’s win is a remarkable achievement.
