Anchorage police shot and killed a man inside a Midtown hotel room early Friday after he fired through the door at officers. The incident occurred at the Hampton Inn Anchorage on Credit Union Drive, near C Street and Tudor Road.
Police responded around 3:45 after hotel security reported a suspicious vehicle with damage indicating that it might have been stolen. Officers found a felony warrant linked to the car, Police Chief Sean Case said.
Inside the hotel, officers encountered two people who had been in the vehicle, including the suspect, who entered a room occupied by six people. The group included multiple adults and children. After the suspect shut the door, officers attempted negotiations while monitoring the situation.
Police quickly determined they faced a hostage situation and continued to communicate with those inside the room. Around 30 minutes later, the suspect fired two rounds through the door while officers stood in the hallway.
Authorities then observed the suspect committing a crime against one of the room occupants, prompting them to act immediately. Officers entered the room and fired at least one shot, fatally attacking the suspect.
No children or officers suffered injuries during the Anchorage hotel police shooting, according to Case. By late Friday morning, several police vehicles remained at the hotel, and yellow crime scene tape blocked the North parking lot.
An armored vehicle with a ladder was positioned between a second-floor window. Case described the situation as a highly unusual and high-risk call for officers. Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s name, his connection to the other occupant, or how many officers fired shots.
Police body cameras recorded the incident, and footage will be released within 45 days unless the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions requests a delay. Investigators are still working to gather more details about the Anchorage hotel police shooting, including potential injuries to non-juvenile occupants.
