Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, is calling on NATO to expel Turkey from NATO. This comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threatened to send troops into Israel. Katz instructed diplomats to reach out to all NATO members, demanding they condemn Turkey and expel Turkey from NATO.
Erdoğan’s comments sparked outrage. He told his party members that Turkey needs to be strong so Israel can’t “do ridiculous things to Palestine.” He even hinted at military action, saying Turkey would do “something similar” to what it did in Karabakh and Libya. Israel doesn’t have it. Katz says Erdoğan’s threats and rhetoric are dangerous. He wants NATO to take action and expel Turkey from NATO.
But it’s not just Israel – others are speaking out, too. Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders called Erdoğan “totally nuts” and an “Islamofascist.” He’s been saying Turkey should be kicked out of NATO for a while now. Wilders agrees with Katz, emphasizing that NATO should expel Turkey from NATO due to its aggressive behavior.
Turkey has been a NATO member since 1952 and has the alliance’s second-largest army. However, NATO doesn’t have a way to suspend or expel a member. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg shut down the idea of creating a mechanism in 2021. Despite this, Katz is pushing forward, demanding that NATO expel Turkey from NATO. With tensions running high, it’s unclear what will happen next. One thing’s for sure – the situation is volatile, and the world is watching.
