Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister, expressed hope for a Gaza peace deal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He stated that Qatar hopes to see the Palestinian Authority return to play a governing role in Gaza once the war with Israel comes to an end.
The Prime Minister’s comments came two days after a ceasefire, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, took effect in Gaza. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that Gazans should dictate how the enclave will be governed, rather than any other country.
He said, “We hope to see the PA back in Gaza. We hope to see a government that will really address the issues of the people over there.” The Prime Minister acknowledged that, given the destruction caused by the war, there is still much work to be done in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the international community is watching the situation closely. The United Nations has called for a lasting ceasefire and a return to negotiations.
Furthermore, the European Union has pledged support for the reconstruction of Gaza. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, stated that the EU has also announced plans to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the war.
Additionally, the EU will work with international partners to support the Palestinian Authority in its efforts to govern Gaza. It includes providing training and capacity-building programs for PA officials.
In addition, the Arab League has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Gaza. The meeting will bring together foreign ministers from across the region.
The Gaza peace deal efforts, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, are crucial for the region’s future. A lasting peace deal will require the support of the international community, including the EU and the Arab League.
