An explosion killed three people and injured dozens during a crowded festival in Thailand’s northern Tak province late Friday. The festival bombing in Thailand occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time at the Red Cross Doi Loyfa fair in Umphang district.
Eyewitnesses reported the explosive being hurled onto the festival grounds, landing near the stage where people were dancing. Emergency responders quickly arrived, treating critically injured victims at the scene and transporting others to nearby hospitals.
Thai police confirmed that 48 people were wounded, including six who remain in critical condition. Officials believe an improvised explosive device (IED) caused the blast, and two suspects have been detained for questioning.
However, charges have yet to be filed as investigations continue. Authorities closed off the affected area, which was left scattered with debris and illuminated by festival string lights. Images shared by the rescue team showed the devastation and emergency response efforts throughout the night.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra gave her condolences to the victims’ families and promised to investigate the Thailand festival bombing. In a statement, she directed police and security agencies to enhance their presence at public events to prevent further incidents.
The annual Red Cross Doi Loyfa fair attracts thousands, with approximately 9000 people attending this year’s event. Umphang district, located near the Myanmar border, has rarely witnessed such violence in its peaceful community. Furthermore, authorities have intensified efforts to identify motives and ensure safety at large gatherings as the festival bombing in Thailand shakes the region.
