Governor Mike Dunleavy wants President-elect Donald Trump to reverse Biden-era policies in Alaska that impact the economy and native lands. In a letter dated November 15th, Dunleavy demanded immediate action to repeal rules that he says hinder resource development.
Dunleavy´s 27-page document, made public on Monday, lists suggested federal amendments to encourage Alaska´s development. The Governor requested an executive order to remove restrictions on Arctic National Wildlife Refuge oil drilling and the National Petroleum Reserve activities.
Governor Dunleavy also sought Trump´s support for constructing a controversial 200-mile road to the Ambler mining district and reversing a ban on new roads in the Tongass National Forest. “It is essential that the Alaska-specific Executive Order be issued as soon as President Trump takes office,” Dunleavy stated in the document, “Alaska priorities for federal transition.”
The policy agenda also proposed forming a cabinet-level task force and six federal oversight officials to enforce pro-resource mandates. Dunleavy blamed Biden for destroying economic opportunity in Alaska despite Federal Reserve data showing economic growth during his tenure.
Environmental groups voiced opposition to Dunleavy´s priorities. Matt Jackson of The Wilderness Society labeled the proposals as legally questionable, stating, “Legality is not necessarily a top priority for either of these leaders. We may be seeing more and more illegal rollbacks, law be damned.”
Dunleavy´s list includes controversial proposals like abolishing Interior Department support for putting lands into trust for Native Tribes. He argued that this policy undermines state interests and raises fears about potential casino gambling in Alaska.
Meanwhile, Native tribes advocate for trust lands to enhance tribal sovereignty. Despite his outspoken support for Trump, Dunleavy has not been appointed to any federal roles. As Trump prepares to take office, the battle over Biden-era policies in Alaska is set to continue. Dunleavy concluded by reiterating Alaska´s commitment to prosperity under Trump’s leadership.
