A 15-year-old female opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, killing two people and injuring six others. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes identified the shooter as Natalie Rupnow, also known as Samantha.
Police believe Rupnow died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. The attack occurred Monday morning around 11 a.m. when a second-grade student made the first emergency call to 911. Officers responded quickly and found Rupnow deceased with a handgun.
Police later confirmed that no officers fired weapons during the response. The Wisconsin school shooting claimed the lives of a teacher and a teenage student while critically injuring two others. Four more students were also hurt, with two released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Chief Barnes stated that authorities are working to uncover the shooter’s motive but found no prior warnings or criminal history. Rupnow’s family is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Barnes also acknowledged reports of a manifesto but said it remains unverified now.
Barbara Wiers, the school’s director, emphasized that recent active shooter training helped staff respond swiftly and minimize further injuries. The school’s automatic door-locking system engaged as soon as the incident began.
Wiers further praised students and teachers for handling the frightening situation calmly despite their fear. Wisconsin’s Governor Tony Evers ordered state flags lowered to half-mast, encouraging prayers for those impacted.
President Joe Biden issued a statement condemning the violence. He said, “Students across our country should be learning how to read and write—not having to learn how to duck and cover.”
