The FBI revealed on Friday that Shamsud-Din Jabbar orchestrated a deadly Bourbon Street attack in New Orleans during a New Year’s celebration. New Orleans attack investigation disclosed that Jabbar 42 drove a truck into a packed crowd at 3:15 am Wednesday, killing 14 and injuring 35 others.
Following the collision, officers fatally shot Jabbar during a violent exchange of gunfire near the scene. Authorities confirmed the casualty count is expected to rise as investigations proceed. The FBI stated that Jabbar planned to use a transmitter found in the truck to detonate two IEDs placed on Bourbon Street.
Officials also discovered an ISIS flag inside the vehicle, sparking a probe into possible links to terrorist organizations. The FBI Anchorage Field Office urged the public to report relevant information through their tip line or website.
Records reveal that while Jabbar was a Texas native, he lived briefly in Anchorage, though specific dates remain unverified. The US Army confirmed that Jabbar served as a Human Resource Specialist and IT Specialist between 2007 and 2015.
He later joined the Army Reserve in 2020 and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010. However, Jabbar later on ended his service as a Staff Sergeant. Local authorities stated they are working with the Federal partners to identify immediate threats. The FBI has yet to uncover information indicating an Alaska-specific risk related to Jabbar’s actions in New Orleans.
The New Orleans attack investigation continues examining Jabbar’s motives and any connections to extremist groups. Law enforcement pledged to ensure all leads are pursued to prevent further harm and provide accountability.
