Russia faced a barrage of drone attacks from Ukraine overnight, resulting in one death and multiple fires in residential buildings. The attacks involved 144 drones and targeted various regions, including Moscow, Bryansk, and Kursk.
In Moscow, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that several apartments in two high-rise buildings caught fire, leaving a 46-year-old woman dead and three others injured. The fires forced the evacuation of 43 people to temporary shelters.
The Kremlin swiftly responded, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that the attacks demonstrated Ukraine’s hostility towards Russia. Peskov emphasized the need for Russia to continue its military operation in Ukraine to protect itself from such aggression.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry announced that its air defenses had intercepted the drones, with half of them shot down in the Bryansk region. The attacks also disrupted air travel in Moscow, with four airports shut down and over 30 flights suspended.
However, by Tuesday morning, three of the airports had resumed operations. In a separate development, Russia claimed to have captured three villages in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that it had downed 38 out of 46 Russian drones, including those launched towards Kyiv, Odesa, and Kherson. The latest wave of drone strikes comes as Russia claims gains in eastern Ukraine.
In recent days, Moscow has announced the capture of several villages, including Memryk and Novohrodivka. While Kyiv has not commented, sources indicate that Ukrainian forces have retreated from Novohrodivka.
The escalation in drone attacks follows Russia’s response to Ukraine’s offensive in the Kursk region last month. The situation remains tense, with both sides launching overnight drone raids on each other’s territory.
