Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, is scheduled to visit the United States shortly. During Zelenskyy’s US visit, he will present his plan for succeeding in the war with Russia. His objective is to convey this critical position to Congress, President Biden, and presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Zelenskyy hopes they will listen to his message and recognize the urgency of the situation. He aims to unite his allies under a cohesive plan to increase assistance for Ukraine and address future challenges.
His visit coincides with the White House’s efforts to create a new $375 million military assistance package for Ukraine. In a recent social media post, the Ukrainian President previewed three key components of his strategy. These components include increased weaponry contributions, diplomatic measures to pressure Russia into peace talks, and holding Moscow accountable for its 2022 invasion.
The Ukrainian government has been pressuring the US and its allies to lift the ban on long-range missile usage for some time now. According to the Ukrainian government, these weapons are necessary to launch strikes against Russian sites that act as assault launchpads. Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning, stating that he would interpret any strike of this nature as direct intervention by NATO in the conflict. Recently, when asked if he would support using long-range missiles, Vice President Biden responded with a “No.”
Moreover, Zelenskyy’s US visit offers an understanding of the ongoing debate. Trump has said he could rapidly end the issue if re-elected but has not offered any specifics. Trump is a staunch opponent of continuing to provide support for Ukraine. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the nations that have assisted Ukraine, particularly the US, which has provided $55 billion for defense. Following his departure from Washington, Zelenskyy will go to New York to participate in a United Nations Security Council meeting and deliver an address to the United Nations General Assembly.
