Wales risks falling behind the rest of the UK in meeting clean power targets due to insufficient electricity grid capacity and severe decision-making delays. Consequently, RenewableUK Cymru warns that this lack of infrastructure hinders project development and deters investors. Moreover, Wales may miss opportunities from the UK government’s GB Energy initiative.
The Welsh government prioritizes green jobs and growth, but RenewableUK Cymru urges swift action. Specifically, three wind farms, capable of powering 170,000 households annually, face delays. Notably, one project in Garn Fach, Powys, has waited for approval for over two years. Meanwhile, the UK aims to double onshore wind, triple solar power, and quadruple offshore wind by 2030.
RenewableUK Cymru Director Jess Hooper emphasizes the need for timely action. “Delays send the wrong message, suggesting Wales is unattractive for development,” she says. Furthermore, Hooper proposes a “four nations renewables team” to ensure Wales stays competitive. Similarly, this collaboration would facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices.
Meanwhile, not everyone supports increased wind and solar farms. An Anglesey resident, Sarah Pye fears the Maen Hir solar development will industrialize rural Wales. In addition, she worries about food security. “It breaks my heart,” she says. “We’re the mother of Wales, feeding Wales. What about food security?” In response, Lightsource BP assures residents will not be forced to leave their homes.
Apprentices Grace Dennehy and Hollie Massey, training to be wind turbine technicians, see a future in clean energy. However, they want faster development. “We need to grow the industry faster,” Dennehy says. Similarly, Wales Clean Energy development is crucial for meeting UK targets. Therefore, swift action is necessary.
The UK government’s GB Energy initiative aims to accelerate Wales Clean Energy growth. Likewise, Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens ensures Wales will play a significant role. Additionally, Marine Energy Wales hopes GB Energy will accelerate floating offshore wind development.
