President Donald Trump appointed Emma Pokon to EPA Region 10, based in Seattle. He assigned her the task of overseeing federal environmental regulations across four states. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy announced the appointment on Wednesday.
Dunleavy praised Pokon’s qualifications and leadership in environmental policy. Pokon has served as commissioner of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation since August 2023, taking over after Jason Brune resigned.
Dunleavy later confirmed her as a commissioner in December, recognizing her extensive experience in environmental law and resource management. Before leading DEC in 2020, she played an important role in shaping Alaska’s environmental policies while advocating for balanced regulatory approaches.
Expressing gratitude, Pokon called her time at DEC an incredible privilege and emphasized her commitment to implementing environmental laws fairly. She looks forward to collaborating with EPA leadership to ensure effective policies benefiting communities and natural resources.
Deputy Commissioner Christina Carpenter will act as DEC commissioner while officials search for Pokon’s permanent successor. The transition ensures continued oversight of Alaska’s environmental regulations during the leadership change.
After Trump appointed Emma Pokon, the EPA Region 10 administrator now oversees policies affecting Alaska, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and 271 tribal governments. She replaces Casey Sixkiller, a Biden-era appointee who now directs the Washington Department of Ecology.
Dan Opalski had temporarily led Region 10 while the EPA finalized its leadership transition. With Pokon at the helm, the agency anticipates a renewed focus on regulatory efficiency and environmental protection across the Pacific Northwest.
