As Thanksgiving week begins, Anchorage Police are urging residents to prepare for heavier traffic, changing road conditions, and increased travel across the city and state. With holiday plans, family gatherings, and early winter weather overlapping, officials say a few extra precautions can help ensure everyone arrives safely.
Authorities recommend checking road and weather conditions before heading out, noting that icy roads and seasonal congestion can significantly slow travel times. Drivers are encouraged to leave early and build in extra time for delays.
In true Alaska fashion, police are also reminding travelers to keep an emergency winter kit in their vehicles. Suggested items include a blanket, flashlight, snacks, water, and a phone charger—essentials that can make a major difference during unexpected delays or sudden weather shifts.
Drivers are asked to be especially cautious on slick roads by reducing speed, increasing following distance, and staying alert for pedestrians and moose, both of which are more difficult to see in low-light winter conditions.

APD also emphasized the importance of staying focused and sober behind the wheel. Drivers should avoid distractions such as cell phones, and anyone celebrating the holiday with alcohol should arrange a sober driver or secure a safe ride home.
Let’s make sure everyone gets to enjoy the holiday safely wishing Anchorage residents a warm and safe Thanksgiving.
