Officials are warning residents west of Riverside Drive in Suicide Basin about a potential flooding situation due to rising water levels. Residents should prepare for possible evacuation by assembling a go-bag with essential items and creating an emergency plan, including a safe meeting point and evacuation route.
Last year’s devastating flood, which caused widespread damage and disruption, highlights the importance of preparedness. To mitigate the risk, workers are now putting in place reinforcements like sandbags and water barriers, and multiple agencies are collaborating to ensure public safety.
The 2024 state fair program is now available, featuring a vibrant cover design by Nikki Niedringhaus, a local artist from Girdwood. This year’s “Enjoy the Ride” theme promises a fun-filled experience with live music, food vendors, animal exhibits, and more. Niedringhaus drew inspiration from the fair’s rich agricultural heritage and lively culture, saying, “I imagined the animals on their fun journey to the fair.”
The state fair, a cherished annual event, is expected to attract large crowds from across the region this year. Meanwhile, maintenance crews are closing the North Eagle River overpass on the Glenn Highway near Eagle River until the end of the month. Drivers should take the next exit and re-enter the highway to detour around the closure, adding approximately 10 minutes to their journey.
