Perplexity has officially launched its new Comet browser, rolling it out in limited access to Perplexity Max subscribers this week. Built on Chromium, this browser will replace traditional search engines like Google with AI assistance for direct conversational results.
Instead of cluttered search pages, Comet gives summarized answers, complete with source links and product options when relevant. An integrated ad blocker and a summarize button make browsing cleaner, while an “Ask” button adds live context to tabs.
Users can connect Gmail to Comet, allowing AI-powered queries across their inbox, calendar, and upcoming events or tasks. According to CEO Aravind Srinivas, Comet’s design reflects a shift from passive browsing to intelligent, interactive online thinking.
The browser allows users to ask questions any time, triggering a more profound understanding without leaving the current page. Comet minimizes tab chaos by unifying them into a single intuitive space that adapts to a user’s thought process.
Rather than jumping across platforms, users can ask Comet to schedule meetings, send emails, or compare items instantly. Earlier this year, the macOS beta added a try-on feature that lets users visualize clothing on AI-generated avatars.
Now available on Windows for select testers, Comet will soon expand to Android and iOS with accelerated development timelines. Srinivas stated that Android development is ahead of schedule and updates for iOS are also expected in the coming weeks.
Interested users can join a waitlist for access, and new testers receive invites to share with others. In a separate report, Bloomberg revealed that Apple executives have discussed acquiring Perplexity, valued at $14 billion. If approved, that deal could become the largest acquisition in Apple’s history, signaling major AI ambitions for the company.
