More than 20 residents gathered Monday to discuss ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating impacts of Typhoon Halong, which caused widespread damage across Western Alaska earlier this month.
Representatives from the City of Napaskiak, Village Council, AVCP, Naps Inc., and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) joined local leaders to share updates and plan the next steps in the community’s rebuilding process.
Jon Cox, Task Force Lead with the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, reported that 21 homes have been assessed so far, with 10 showing significant water damage. Crews have already removed damaged insulation and installed heaters in four homes to help them dry out and prevent further deterioration.
During the meeting, residents expressed concerns about the arrival of building materials and discussed local hiring opportunities to ensure community members can participate in rebuilding efforts.
Emily Hjortstorp, also with the Division, provided information on how residents can apply for individual assistance through the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), the American Red Cross, and FEMA. She emphasized that early applications are key to speeding up recovery timelines and resource distribution.
The meeting concluded with heartfelt thanks to the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, along with local and state partners, for their rapid response and continued commitment to Napaskiak’s recovery.
A follow-up community meeting will be scheduled soon to review progress and discuss additional steps as Napaskiak continues its path toward full restoration and resilience.
For official updates and assistance resources, residents are encouraged to visit the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection and the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
