Lionel Messi scored the 899th goal of his career as Inter Miami CF defeated D.C. United 2–1 in a Major League Soccer match Saturday, moving the Argentine star within one goal of the 900-goal milestone.

Inter Miami opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Rodrigo De Paul struck from outside the box. Messi doubled Miami’s lead about 10 minutes later, finishing a through ball from Mateo Silvetti with a chipped shot over goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
D.C. United pulled a goal back in the second half, but Miami held on to secure a 2–1 victory in front of more than 72,000 fans at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
The win marked Inter Miami’s second victory of the Major League Soccer season and moved the team into third place in the Eastern Conference standings with six points from three matches.
“Messi scored the 899th goal of his career to help Inter Miami to a 2–1 win,” match coverage reported, highlighting the milestone that places the Argentine forward within reach of the 900-goal mark.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and has remained one of the most influential players in Major League Soccer since arriving in the United State
The Argentine forward has accumulated goals across club and international competitions throughout his career, including years at Barcelona and with the Argentina national team.
Messi now sits one goal away from reaching 900 career goals, a landmark that could come in Inter Miami’s upcoming matches as the club continues its Major League Soccer campaign
Messi’s milestone also sparked reactions across social media, where fans shared humorous posts comparing his scoring pace with Cristiano Ronaldo’s record. One widely shared post noted that Ronaldo needed 1,233 games to reach 899 goals, while Messi reached the same mark in about 1,140 games.
