Fire officials are conducting a planned pile burn today near McKinley Village as part of the ongoing FireWise fuels reduction project aimed at minimizing wildfire risks in the area.
The Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection is partnering with the McKinley Volunteer Fire Department to carry out the controlled burn safely and effectively. According to officials, this initiative marks the third consecutive year of the fuels reduction project, which plays a crucial role in protecting communities within the wildland-urban interface.
Today’s operation includes the burning of 67 debris piles located south of the Denali Park entrance. Weather conditions are being closely monitored to ensure a controlled and safe burn.
Fire crews plan to move to a second site near Cantwell tomorrow, where 10 larger piles will be burned as part of the same effort.
Officials encourage residents not to be alarmed by visible smoke in the area and thank the public for their continued cooperation and support.
This long-term partnership between fire management agencies and local volunteers underscores Alaska’s commitment to community safety and wildfire prevention through proactive management.
