An Anchorage gas station shooting in a parking lot left a man critically injured on Tuesday, as confirmed by authorities. Following the incident, 25-year-old Savon Berry was apprehended on Monday on charges of felony assault. The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Holiday store, as detailed in a summary of an Anchorage police report accompanying criminal charges.
Police were alerted to gunfire in the parking lot at the intersection of Northern Lights Boulevard and Boniface Parkway around 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Savon Berry, who fled the scene, was apprehended within two hours. Meanwhile, the victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, attempted to drive away but crashed into a nearby tree. Subsequently, he exited the vehicle and collapsed. First responders administered medical aid at the scene before transporting him to a hospital for surgery.
During the investigation, Berry informed detectives that he observed the other man trailing him. He sought refuge in the gas station, where the individual abruptly positioned himself before the door, startling Berry, as outlined in the police report summary. Surveillance footage confirmed the encounter between the two men outside the station, during which they engaged in a verbal altercation. Despite the lack of apparent aggression from McAlister, who had his arms raised and hands out to his sides, Berry discharged a single shot, striking him in the chest.
According to police, Berry was under parole supervision after being convicted of manslaughter in 2018. He was involved in the 2016 killing of a 40-year-old woman in Anchorage along with three other teenagers. One of the defendants admitted to planning to rob the woman’s son during a marijuana transaction, but another teen shot her when she opened the door. In September 2020, Berry began discretionary parole, as confirmed by Alaska Department of Corrections spokeswoman Betsy Holley. Following his arrest on Monday, he was taken into custody at the Anchorage Correctional Complex. Initially sentenced to serve nine years, Holley stated.
