A severe train accident occurred early Saturday morning in Anchorage’s Spenard neighborhood, leaving a man with life-threatening injuries, according to the Alaska Railroad.
At around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, a southbound, empty passenger train struck a man near Milepost 111.4 on the main line. This location is north of the railroad’s intersection with West 36th Avenue. The man, whose identity remains unknown, was found approximately 500 feet from the nearest crossing.
Emergency responders transported the injured man to a hospital, where he continues to receive care, according to an Anchorage police spokeswoman. As of Monday morning, further updates on his condition have yet to be provided.
The train involved in the Anchorage train accident was traveling from Anchorage to Whittier, where it was set to pick up cruise ship passengers. Alaska Railroad spokeswoman Meghan Clemens emphasized the importance of safety around train tracks, reminding the public that the 100-foot right-of-way on either side of the tracks is strictly off-limits for pedestrians.
The railroad urged everyone to know the inherent dangers of walking near active rail corridors.
