Mayor Dave Kiffer of Ketchikan expressed his surprise at the incident and offered his deepest sympathies to the families affected. He conveyed his anguish over the catastrophe that had struck his community. Three individuals sustained injuries as a consequence of the landslide. One was treated and discharged from the hospital, while the other two are still hospitalized. Considering the potential for another landslide, city officials implemented evacuation orders in regions south of the initial collapse. The evacuation affects residents on Third Avenue, Second Avenue, Walter Street, First Avenue, and White Cliff Avenue between Austin Street and Nadeau Street.
Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a catastrophe emergency in Ketchikan, directing state agencies to offer support. Meanwhile, emergency shelters are set up at a local high school, and response teams are ready for potential additional collapses. Dave Kiffer and Rodney Dial, the mayors of Ketchikan’s city and borough, jointly declared a local disaster emergency. This declaration highlights their dedication to assisting families struggling to recover. The landslide in Alaska resulted in a path of devastation, with trees that snapped, power poles that collapsed, and residue that crashed into residences on the hillside. KPU Electric, a local utility, reported power, phone, and internet disruptions. While some services were restored by Sunday night, many power poles remain damaged, leading to ongoing power disruptions.
