Residents in the Western Alaska village of Kotlik faced rapidly rising floodwaters on Wednesday evening as a powerful fall storm swept through the region, bringing strong winds, high tides, and heavy rain.
Local resident Keshawn Keyes captured and shared dramatic photos showing water levels climbing quickly around homes and roads, illustrating just how fast conditions deteriorated. The National Weather Service had previously warned of coastal flooding risks across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta as the system pushed water inland.
Emergency officials advised residents to stay alert, move belongings to higher ground, and avoid flooded areas. While no major injuries have been reported so far, some families have begun preparing to evacuate if conditions worsen overnight.
This flooding comes as Alaska’s western coast continues to experience increasingly volatile fall weather, often bringing a mix of strong coastal winds and surging sea levels that threaten low-lying communities like Kotlik.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with local response teams ready to assist if evacuation or rescue operations become necessary.
