A 17-year-old Cassandra Canaveral Kodiak Beach explosion victim has returned home after surviving the devastating explosion that left her with severe burns. Canaveral spent 16 days in the Alaska Native Medical Center pediatric burn unit in Anchorage before being cleared to return to Kodiak.
“I’m doing really good,” Canaveral said. “It’s just a crazy thing to go through.” The explosion happened earlier this month during a party at White Sands Beach. According to witnesses, someone threw a 55-gallon drum of fuel into the fire, causing an instant blast.
Eight people were injured in this incident, including Canaveral. While recalling the incident, Canaveral stated that she just remembers standing close to the fire with her friend Mia to get warm. They saw the drum being tossed in and how everything exploded within seconds.
Canaveral suffered second-degree burns on her wrists, face, hands, and scalp. While her recovery was going well, she explained that she faced challenges as well. Like my hair. I can’t touch it without gloves cause it, just like, gives me chills,” Canaveral said.
Her current treatment involves moisturizing the burned areas, which she compares to a terrible sunburn. Despite the ordeal, Canaveral remains optimistic, and plans to return to school soon. The community continues to rally around the Kodiak Beach explosion victim, offering support as she recovers from this unexpected tragedy.
