A knife attack in Germany, Solingen during a Friday night event prompted a vigorous hunt for an unidentified suspect. Three individuals were killed in the vicious attack, and eight others were injured, of which 5 of them are critical.
The knife attack happened in the center plaza of Solingen, where hundreds of people had come to commemorate the city’s 650th anniversary, a diversity-promoting event. Law enforcement officials sent forces, including aerial units like helicopters, to capture the male offender, who had left the area right away after the incident.
Authorities have verified the deaths of a 56-year-old lady in the attack and two males, ages 67 and 56. Of the eight hurt, four are in critical state. At this point the authorities cannot exclude terrorism, they are still looking at the motivation. They have apprehended a 15-year-old, but they have not given more information.
German interior minister Nancy Faeser expressed great shock at the Solingen knife incident. Witnesses said the incident happened not far from a live music venue. Attending the event, Lars Breitzke told Solinger Tageblatt, the local newspaper, that he was nearby when the incident happened. Seeing other people lying on the ground and surrounding bloodstains, he quickly realized the seriousness of the matter in contrast to what he first thought was someone who had just fallen from drunkenness.
Over the past year, knife attacks have alarmingly increased in Germany. Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach voiced hope for the injured people’s recovery. Following the incident, knife violence has been a hot topic in German politics, particularly in areas like Soligengy. The regional premier, Hendrik Wüst, was grateful to the police and rescue teams for their efforts to protect lives and unite with the victims and their families. Initially scheduled for last Friday through Sunday, the event was canceled following the tragedy.
