As temperatures drop across the region, local officials are advising residents to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of frozen or burst water pipes during the winter season.
Homeowners and businesses are encouraged to keep a small, steady flow of water running from indoor faucets to maintain circulation. Closing crawl space vents, ensuring proper pipe insulation, and confirming that heat tapes are plugged in and functioning are also recommended. Outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, hoses disconnected, and exposed areas properly insulated.
According to the City and Borough of Juneau, these small steps can prevent significant water damage and service interruptions. Pipes that freeze due to inadequate insulation or maintenance can burst, causing costly damage and leaving occupants without running water.

Residents who encounter frozen pipes may request a water shutoff by contacting the Emergency Water Turn-Off service Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or by calling (907) 586-2165 after hours. Officials noted that the municipality does not thaw frozen pipes, and property owners should contact a licensed plumber or contractor for that service.
Authorities are reminding the public to stay vigilant during cold periods, check on neighbors who may need assistance, and use caution while driving.
