Alaskans joined the world in mourning after former President Jimmy Carter passed away Sunday at 100 years old. President Joe Biden has ordered a National Day of Mourning. Furthermore, he scheduled an official state funeral in Washington, D.C., on January 9th.
Carter served as president from 1977 to 1982 and spent his post-presidential years advancing humanitarian efforts worldwide. Although political differences existed, Alaska leaders reflected on Jimmy Carter’s impact on Alaska.
Governor Mike Dunleavy offered his condolences, focusing on Carter’s dedication to democracy and human rights as an inspiration to millions. He wrote on social media that “His 100 years on this earth had purpose and meaning, and he was deeply committed to his faith, family, and our country.”
U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski remembered Carter for his humanitarian work, saying his legacy promotes peace and goodwill. Senator Dan Sullivan acknowledged Carter’s commitment to national service while noting political disagreements on Alaska’s development and military priorities.
While differing politically from Carter, U.S. Representative-elect Nick Begich admired his integrity and pursuit of free elections and peace. “He had a true heart for humanity, and reminded us that we can passionately disagree while also sincerely caring for one another,” Begich remarked.
Anchorage resident and former Alaska state officer Jane Ruth Angvik recalled the challenges and long-term benefits brought by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). Carter’s legacy surrounds the ANILCA. Angvik explained that while Alaskans initially resisted Carter’s environmental policies, the results over decades benefited the state greatly.
Angvik further stated, “I believe that he is the most astonishing former president we’ve ever had in America, and that has to do with his efforts to create world peace and to create opportunities for the Carter Center to fight disease all over the world.”
Carter’s passing has united Americans from Alaska to Georgia in celebrating his commitment to service and advocacy for peace. Leaders continue to commemorate Jimmy Carter’s impact on Alaska and his influence on global humanitarianism.
