India’s Foreign Minister, S Jaishankar, will make a historic Jaishankar Pakistan visit this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This marks the first high-level visit from India to Pakistan in nearly a decade.
The SCO summit takes place from October 15 to 16, focusing on Central Asia’s security and economic matters. China, Russia, and four Central Asian countries founded the organization in 2001 to counterbalance Western alliances like NATO. India and Pakistan joined in 2017.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars since gaining independence in 1947. Kashmir disputes sparked two of these conflicts. Tensions escalated in 2019 when India launched strikes in Pakistani territory.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, visited India last year for an SCO meeting. It sparked hopes of improved India-Pakistan relations. However, Bhutto-Zardari clarified that his visit focused solely on the SCO.
The upcoming Jaishankar Pakistan visit has garnered significant attention, with India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, confirming Jaishankar’s attendance. Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation to the SCO summit.
