Israel launched its first strike on Yemen, targeting Hodeidah port, in response to a deadly Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv. This marked a significant escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Houthis. Israeli warplanes flew 1,000 miles to reach the target, showcasing Israel’s military capabilities.
Deadly Escalation in the Middle East
Houthi rebels killed one Israeli citizen and injured others in a drone attack on Tel Aviv. The Iran-backed group claimed responsibility. This attack escalated the conflict between Israel and Houthis, who have been targeting Israeli shipping in solidarity with Gaza.
Houthis have fought a civil war in Yemen for nearly a decade, receiving Iranian arms and training. Since October, they have launched over 200 attacks on Israeli civilians and infrastructure, but most were intercepted. However, the Tel Aviv attack prompted a swift Israeli response.
Israeli aircraft attacked Hodeidah, killing at least six and injuring scores more. Israel targeted Iranian-used oil facilities. Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that the operation demonstrated Israel’s seriousness and ability to reach distant targets.
Military Leaders Trade Threats
Houthi spokesman Yehya Saree vowed to continue attacking Israel, declaring a “long war” and threatening Tel Aviv’s safety. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned of severe retaliation against further attacks.
Both sides raised concerns about a wider conflict, with no signs of backing down. Iran’s support for Houthis and Hezbollah sparked fears of open warfare between Israel and Iran. The international community urges restraint, but the situation remains volatile.
