Iran’s national women’s soccer team has returned home after several players briefly sought asylum during their trip to Australia for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, according to Iranian media reports.
The team traveled back through Malaysia and Turkey before entering Iran, where Iranian media reported the players were welcomed and safe.
The situation began when a number of players and at least one staff member requested asylum in Australia following the team’s elimination from the tournament. The move drew international attention, particularly after some players did not sing the national anthem before a match, which led to criticism in Iranian media.
Most of the players later withdrew their asylum requests and chose to return with the team. Iranian authorities said there would be no consequences for those who came back.
However, two players remain in Australia and are reportedly pursuing football opportunities there.
The incident has raised concerns among international observers about the safety and freedom of athletes, especially women, representing Iran abroad.
