The United States escalated pressure on Tehran on Tuesday with an Iran nuclear enrichment program demanding a complete end to the uranium activities. Special envoy Steve Witkoff declared that Washington now expects Iran to halt and dismantle its nuclear enrichment and weaponization programs entirely.
Just days before an important round of negotiations between American and Iranian officials starts, Witkoffs remarks seem to solidify the US stance. He was adamant in his statement that any final deal must ensure peace.
In a Fox News interview, Witkoff implied that Iran may keep enriching uranium to 3.67% for use in civilian electricity. However, Tuesday’s statement was retracted, making it apparent that Washington wants to stop enrichment activities based on the Trump administration’s directive.
The envoy spoke after a weekend meeting in Oman with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during which both sides agreed to resume nuclear talks on April 19. Trump, while pressing for a swift diplomatic resolution, wanted harsh consequences.
Republican lawmakers have pushed for permanent restrictions, demanding the White House block Tehran from enriching uranium or rebuilding nuclear capabilities. In a letter, 9 GOP members cautioned against any deal resembling the 2015 JCPOA, which Trump withdrew from during his term.
Meanwhile, tensions intensified after Trump tied Iran to a recent Houthi-led Red Sea attack. Despite threats, Trump has repeatedly emphasized his preference for a diplomatic solution. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei expressed skepticism but said Tehran would engage cautiously.
