The Hatcher Pass road closure has been announced due to high avalanche danger. Alaska State Parks made the announcement on Thursday afternoon. Heavy wet snow has created a high-risk avalanche situation. Justin Shelby, Administrative Operations Manager for the Alaska Dept. of Transportation and Public Safety, says the closure is a precautionary measure. “This closure is a preemptive measure to mitigate the risk of an avalanche during the anticipated storm this weekend,” Shelby explains.
The decision to close the road was not made lightly. Alaska State Parks and the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Safety carefully assessed the situation before making the announcement. They considered the heavy snowfall, the risk of avalanches, and the potential impact on travelers. By closing the road, they aim to prevent any accidents or incidents.
Alaska State Park officials report 9 inches of fresh snow at Independence Bowl, near mile 14. Snowmachining trails from Gold Mint to Fishhook are closed due to avalanche danger. However, snow machines can travel from Gold Mint to Archangel Valley, but conditions are hazardous. Hatcher Pass Lodge is also closed until further notice.
Travelers in the area should be aware of the changing weather conditions. The forecast predicts more snowfall and high winds, which could further increase the avalanche risk. Alaska State Park officials advise travelers to exercise caution and be prepared. Austin McDaniel, communications director for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, recommends carrying safety devices.
In addition to the Hatcher Pass road closure, Alaska State Parks and the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Safety are working to monitor the situation. They will continue to assess the avalanche risk and make adjustments as needed. Travelers should stay informed and plan accordingly.
