The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Anchorage Field Office is warning Alaska residents about an increase in fraud schemes involving scammers who impersonate law enforcement officers or government officials.
According to the FBI, the scams typically involve unsolicited phone calls in which callers falsely claim that the recipient has an outstanding warrant, missed jury duty, or other legal issues. The scammers then demand immediate payment or request sensitive personal information, such as Social Security numbers or banking details, in order to resolve the alleged problem.
The FBI emphasized that legitimate law enforcement agencies and courts do not contact individuals by phone to demand payment to clear warrants or resolve jury service issues. Officials cautioned that scammers may use phone numbers that appear legitimate or mimic official government lines, making the calls seem authentic.
Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such a call and to avoid providing any personal or financial information. Individuals are encouraged to independently verify claims by contacting the relevant agency directly using publicly listed contact information.

The FBI encourages anyone who believes they may have been targeted or affected by a scam to report the incident and to contact local law enforcement or the FBI to confirm the legitimacy of any claims.
Authorities remind the public that staying informed and cautious is one of the most effective ways to prevent fraud and protect personal information.
