The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department says it continues to work diligently throughout the winter season to keep city roads clear and safe, emphasizing that snow removal operations are carefully planned but remain dependent on changing weather conditions.
According to Public Works officials, snow removal efforts prioritize main roads, emergency routes, and key public areas to ensure that essential services can operate without interruption. Once those areas are cleared, crews shift their focus to residential neighborhoods. Officials note that severe weather or additional snowfall may require schedule adjustments.
Residents are reminded that city code requires adjacent property owners to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Snow removed from sidewalks may be pushed beyond the curb and will be collected during city snow removal operations. However, city code strictly prohibits pushing snow or hard-packed ice from private property onto sidewalks, right-of-ways, fire hydrants, alleys, or streets when it interferes with public use.
Non-emergency snow removal in residential areas is conducted on a rotating neighborhood schedule. Streets scheduled for plowing are posted with signage at least 24 hours in advance, and all vehicles and trailers must be removed from the right-of-way by the posted deadline. This allows crews to operate safely and efficiently while minimizing risks to pedestrians, traffic, and property.
Public Works officials also addressed a common concern following plowing operations. If graders leave behind snow piles that block driveways, residents are encouraged to contact the Public Works dispatch team at (907) 459-6770 so crews can address the issue.
The department further cautioned that driveways not maintained throughout the winter may experience significant drop-offs after hard pack is removed from streets and sidewalks. These drop-offs can damage vehicles, and residents are urged to taper the transition before entering or exiting driveways. Maintaining driveways during winter months remains the responsibility of property owners.
