The debate continues whether Alaska’s Governor Mike Dunleavy will still play a part in the new administration as President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks are being disclosed. Doug Burgum, the Governor of North Dakota, was recently nominated by Trump for the position of Interior Secretary.
Burgum received immediate endorsement from Dunleavy, who praised his private sector qualifications and leadership experience in North Dakota. According to Dunleavy, Burgum’s leadership will support Trump’s coal, oil, gas, and critical minerals development program, benefiting Alaska.
Before endorsing Trump, Burgum sought the Republican Presidential candidacy. North Dakota produces the third most oil and the seventh most coal in the US. Burgum set aggressive environmental targets while serving as governor, such as using fossil fuels continuously to reach net-zero emissions by 2030. He has advocated for carbon capture and storage as an essential energy solution.
Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska, is upbeat about the state’s future under Trump’s leadership. According to Sullivan, Alaska’s enormous mineral, oil, and gas resources can improve America’s economic standing. He also praised Trump’s Cabinet choices in contrast to more important senators.
Trump’s choice for Attorney General Matt Gaetz, a former congressman from Florida, is controversial because of his inexperience as a prosecutor and past accusations. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voiced doubt, implying that Gaetz is not an appropriate candidate.
Trump’s pick for Health and Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., also raised concerns due to his lack of formal medical expertise and controversial vaccine-related statements. Murkowski acknowledged the surprising nature of some of Donald Trump’s cabinet picks, highlighting personal loyalty and familiarity.
