The Dalton Highway remains closed as of Saturday as crews continue responding to severe winter weather, blizzard conditions, and ongoing avalanche risk across the North Slope.
According to the latest roadway update, conditions remain dynamic, and travel is not advised. Officials say intermittent closures are expected to continue as crews work to restore safe travel conditions.
Atigun Pass Update
Atigun Pass was closed overnight due to deteriorating weather. One lane has since been temporarily opened to allow existing traffic to move through the pass. Once vehicles have cleared the area, the roadway will be closed again for avalanche mitigation operations.
Avalanche control work will begin after all vehicles are safely removed from the pass to reduce the risk of snow slides and ensure a safer reopening.
Roadway Operations
Maintenance and Operations crews are actively working in multiple locations along the Dalton Highway:
- Sag River M&O crews are working to open the roadway from Sag River Station south to the stalled tanker at Milepost 272
- An offloading truck is expected to arrive at the tanker to assist with recovery efforts
- Ice Cut at Milepost 325 is also believed to be closed due to heavy drifting snow
Weather Conditions
Blizzard conditions continue across the North Slope, with low visibility, strong winds, and heavy snow drifting impacting road conditions and slowing cleanup efforts. Crews will continue clearing roadways as weather conditions allow.
