Sims accepted salvation at age 9 and answered God’s call to preach at 17. In 1952, the church’s leadership ordained Elwood Sims, marking the start of a remarkable ministry. His early years saw his assistance with revival meetings at Forrest Avenue Baptist Church in Gadsden and serving as interim pastor of South Park Baptist Church in Birmingham and Macedonia Baptist Church in Bessemer.
As Sims continued his education, he expanded his ministry, leading multiple churches in Alabama and Kentucky. His leadership and compassion inspired congregations in various communities, fostering spiritual growth and community engagement.
Through his extensive ministry, Sims demonstrated remarkable adaptability, balancing pastoral duties with a teaching career in Dallas County schools. This dual role allowed him to impact lives both spiritually and educationally.
Sims’ family, including his wife, Sarah Ruth Epley, four sons, and a daughter, remember his tireless dedication. He had six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
