On Thursday, Anchorage residents witnessed a significant law enforcement operation as federal agents and police surrounded the Chelsea Inn in Spenard. The Chelsea Inn FBI investigation involved Anchorage Police Department officers, FBI agents, and additional agencies working under a federal narcotics search warrant.
FBI spokesperson Chloe Martin confirmed that specialized law enforcement units, including multiple SWAT teams, executed the operation alongside Anchorage police partners. Martin said the evidence response team was on scene collecting materials as the operation continued throughout the morning.
She clarified that there was no indication of immediate danger to residents and that the investigation posed no elevated threat to public safety. Anchorage Police Department deputy community relations director Christopher Barraza explained that officers cannot disclose case details but reassured residents about safety concerns.
The visible police buildup prompted temporary traffic closures, including one westbound lane of Spenard Road and sections of Lois and Oregon drives. Regina Romero, APD´s community relations director, later confirmed those roads had reopened by 8:45 am after initial law enforcement restrictions were lifted.
Officers urged drivers to avoid the area if possible and follow instructions given at the scene to ensure smooth operations. Law enforcement officials said the presence would remain active for several hours while investigators gathered evidence linked to the ongoing narcotics case.
Multiple unmarked Anchorage police cruisers and tactical vans lined Spenard Road early Thursday, drawing attention from passing commuters and nearby residents. Community members were reminded that no public threat existed, though officers maintained heightened visibility to manage crowds and maintain traffic safety.
