Armenia’s foreign minister is setting his sights on Washington D.C. He’ll be there on July 9th and 10th, coinciding with the kick-off of the NATO summit in the U.S. capital. This trip signifies Armenia’s growing interest in the West, a shift from their traditional alliance with Russia.
The Armenian foreign minister will participate in events alongside the NATO summit, including those celebrating the organization’s 75th anniversary and individual meetings with other officials. It’s important to note that Armenia isn’t a NATO member, belonging to a separate alliance led by Russia.
This move towards the West comes after a souring relationship with Russia. Armenia feels Russia didn’t adequately support them in conflicts with neighboring Azerbaijan. To further strengthen ties with the West, Armenia will hold joint military exercises with the United States later this month, focusing on peacekeeping missions. It’s worth noting that the US recently postponed similar exercises planned for Georgia, another country in the region.
