The Alaska State Fair is back, kicking off on August 16 and running through September 2. This year’s event promises to deliver the classic fair experience, with a lineup of food, vendors, concerts, and entertainment. Thrill-seekers will love the 40+ rides, including the new “Four-by-Fun” dune buggy ride for kids.
Chase Eckert, safety and operations chief for Golden Wheel Amusements, is excited about the big crowds. “We’re expecting a huge turnout,” he says. “The weather is perfect, and we can’t wait to start.” With a motto of “Safer is Funner,” Eckert ensures that every ride is thoroughly inspected and ready for the estimated 400,000 visitors.
Nearby, Marian Romano’s Potato Palace is serving up delicious eats for the 40th year. Romano loves chatting with familiar faces and working alongside her family. “It’s like a 14-day family reunion,” she says. “We enjoy every moment, from the little ones sleeping in potato boxes to the big ones pitching in to help.”
Comic strip creator Chad Carpenter is also a longtime fair favorite, with 33 years of experience. He revels in the fair’s lively atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. “It’s amazing how many visitors come from beyond Alaska,” he says.
Over the next few weeks, fairgoers can enjoy non-stop entertainment, animal exhibits, and massive vegetables. Gates open at 11 a.m. daily, closing at 10 p.m. except on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Labor Day. Parking is free for cars and trucks, with separate rates for RVs and tent camping.
