In response to the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on food assistance programs, the Alaska Democratic Party has launched a community food drive to help families in need across the state.
The food drive runs from October 29 through November 17, with donation drop-offs open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alaska Democrats headquarters, located at 1500 W 33rd Avenue, Suite 210, Anchorage, AK 99503.
Organizers say the initiative comes at a critical time, as federal food assistance funding is expected to halt on November 1, leaving many Alaskans struggling to afford groceries. “We know this shutdown is hitting working families hardest,” the party said in a statement. “This food drive is one small way we can come together to make sure no one goes hungry.”
Community members are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items, such as canned goods, pasta, rice, cereal, baby food, and shelf-stable proteins. A full list of suggested donations is available on the Alaska Democrats’ social media platforms.
In addition to helping local food banks restock supplies, the food drive aims to strengthen community solidarity during uncertain times. “When federal programs pause, local communities step up — and Alaskans always take care of one another,” said one volunteer coordinator.
Donations collected will be distributed to local pantries and community centers throughout Anchorage and nearby regions, ensuring food reaches those most affected by the shutdown.
Residents who wish to contribute but are unable to visit in person can contact the organizers for coordination or contribute through local partner organizations.
