The Alaska U.S. Army National Guard has deployed UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters to assist with recovery and relief operations in communities affected by Typhoon Halong, which caused widespread damage across Western Alaska.
The helicopters and flight crews are transporting supplies, personnel, and equipment to remote villages that remain isolated due to storm impacts. Many areas continue to face infrastructure challenges, including washed-out roads and limited air access.
The National Guard’s aviation units have been working in coordination with the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) and local tribal governments to deliver emergency aid, food, and building materials.
“These aircraft are essential for reaching communities that can’t be accessed by road or boat,” said mission coordinators from the Guard’s Joint Task Force. “Our focus is on supporting local response teams and restoring vital lifelines as quickly as possible.”
The UH-60L Black Hawk, known for its versatility and reliability in challenging terrain, has been instrumental in disaster relief missions across Alaska, from wildfire evacuations to flood and storm response. Its ability to carry heavy loads and operate in difficult weather conditions makes it a key asset for statewide emergency operations.
As of this week, Guard crews have flown multiple sorties to deliver medical supplies, insulation materials, and food aid to affected villages, including communities along the Kuskokwim Delta and Western Coastline.
State and federal agencies continue to assess long-term recovery needs as cleanup and rebuilding efforts progress.
