The 3rd Munitions Squadron is critical in ensuring the Air Force has combat-capable aircraft. However, the unit’s skills are not always utilized daily.
Tasked with assembling munitions like bombs, missiles, and cartridges, the unit works with a wide array of munitions. “Bomb-building is not something we do often,” said 2nd Lt. Christine Shank, materiel flight commander.
The squadron’s work is essential to supporting the Air Force’s mission. Their role involves assembling and storing munitions, as well as shipping them out to units in need.
To strengthen their skills, the squadron conducted a bomb-building exercise on March 4. The exercise aimed to test their abilities to support the mission.
Meanwhile, the exercise involved testing a new building and materials necessary to construct and store munitions. The new structure was designed and built for building bombs in the harsh Alaskan winter.
The new facility is a significant improvement over the squadron’s previous setup. The old tent was not suitable for the Alaskan climate, and it often hindered the squadron’s ability to work efficiently.
Additionally, the squadron’s new location allows them to operate year-round. Previously, they operated in a tent that collapsed due to snow.
“Our big mission here is to be always ready and always lethal,” said 2nd Lt. Evan Schwarz. “We’re testing our ability to build lethal-capable bombs and ship out missiles.”
Furthermore, the squadron’s role is crucial to operations at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which has one of the largest missile caches in the Pacific Air Forces.
The exercise demonstrated the squadron’s readiness to support the mission. The unit’s ability to build and store munitions in the harsh Alaskan winter is vital.
The squadron’s success is a testament to their hard work and dedication. They are committed to providing the best possible support to the Air Force.
The exercise showcased the capabilities of 2nd Lt. Christine Shank and her team, ensuring they remain always ready and always lethal.
